Sheffield United have the chance to bring in some new faces when the January transfer window opens up for business.
Sheffield United have the opportunity to add more quality to their squad this winter ahead of the second-half of the season. SUFC are currently positioned in 19th place in the Championship table after 23 fixtures.
The Blades are only four points above the relegation zone. They are also 10 points off the play-offs.
Chris Wilder’s side lost 5-3 away at Wrexham last time out on Boxing Day. Patrick Bamford scored twice for the South Yorkshire outfit at the Racecourse Ground, whilst Callum O’Hare also managed to get himself on the scoresheet.
However, Sheffield United weren’t able to get anything from the game and slumped to a disappointing festive defeat in North Wales. They are back in action on Monday night as they aim to bounce back with a win.
Next up is an away trip to the Bet365 Stadium to face Stoke City. Their upcoming opponents are 10th in the league and are only two points off the top six.
The Blades need to freshen things up next month with some reinforcements. With that in mind, Crystal Palace winger Romain Esse should be on their radar.
Sheffield United should sign Crystal Palace winger Romain Esse on loan
Sheffield United had Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan from Crystal Palace last season. SUFC should use their connections at Selhurst Park to get Esse in this campaign in a similar deal.
The 20-year-old has struggled for game time this term with the Eagles and has been limited to just five appearances, two of which have come in the Premier League. Therefore, a temporary exit to Bramall Lane would do him good.
Esse was snapped up by the 2025 FA Cup winners in January and penned a long-term deal in South London running until 2030. He has since featured on 14 occasions for their first-team, finding the net once.
Prior to his transfer, he rose into their senior team at Millwall and scored seven goals in 66 games for the Lions. If he joined Sheffield United, he would get some more valuable experience under his belt.
Romain Esse stats
| Club | Games | Goals |
| Millwall | 66 | 7 |
| Crystal Palace | 14 | 1 |
Why Crystal Palace’s Romain Esse would suit Sheffield United?
Sheffield United would be able to offer Esse regular minutes which is what he needs now. He would give SUFC more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch.
The London-born man is someone who likes to cut in on his left foot from the right flank, similarly to Rak-Sakyi. That could give the Blades a different dimension going forward as they look to hit some consistent form.
Esse is unlikely to break into Oliver Glasner’s starting XI over the coming months. Therefore, letting him depart on loan would be a shrewd decision to boost his development.
